Top 4 trends in window treatments

13 November 2019

Window treatments are a fabulous way to add style and elegance to any room. But they also serve a very practical purpose, providing privacy, weather protection and light control. Like most home décor, trends come and go. So what’s popular in the world of window treatments right now, and what will make a good investment that will stand the test of time? As any interior designer will tell you, window treatments can make or break a room. So when making your choice, it’s important to consider colour, material, style and custom-made versus off-the-shelf. With so many decisions to make, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed, so let’s take a closer look at the options available, so you can make the right choice for your new home.

1. Roller blinds

Clean, simple lines are a popular trend in window treatments. And roller blinds fit the bill perfectly. Available in a huge range of colours and transparencies, roller blinds have seen a huge increase in popularity, especially those made from natural woven fibres incorporating textural elements. The organic, neutral colour of these blinds paired with a white curtain is a lovely combination in any home – from contemporary to classic.

2. Shutters

Shutters provide a classic, timeless look that enhances any home. In addition to timber and faux timber shutters, you can choose from moisture resistant, light control, and even insulated options. However, timber shutters aren’t recommended for high-moisture areas, whereas composite shutters can resist moisture damage, warping and staining. Shutters are an excellent way to control light and airflow throughout your home. While black and white are the most popular colours for shutters, white is hands down the best-seller. While new colour trends come and go, white shutters create a timeless look that never goes out of style. No matter what the décor, white shutters blend in perfectly, creating a balanced simplicity and freshness. Light colours also reflect heat better than dark colours, so white shutters will help make your home cooler and more energy efficient. Designed to complement any home façade, shutters are a flexible choice for your new home.

3. Curtains

Curtains have experienced a surge in popularity in recent years, with more choice than ever before. Fabric is an essential part of choosing curtains, as the material will affect how well your curtains function and how long they will last. Remember, sunlight will fade fabrics over time. So if the room in question gets a lot of light, avoid bright colours, as they tend to fade faster. Neutrals are less likely to fade, and will generally blend into a room’s décor no matter what the colour scheme. Neutral linen curtains are timeless, while another popular choice right now is sheers. This stylish option still allows light in, where privacy and light control aren’t required. Before you measure up, decide how high above the window you’d like the curtains to start. Hanging them higher than the actual window will give a sense of height to the room. Finally, should you choose off-the-shelf or custom-made curtains? With custom-made curtains, you can tailor your curtains to suit the dimensions of your windows and create the perfect look. There may be a considerable price difference between off-the-shelf and custom-made curtains, so consider your budget first before you make a decision.

4. Venetian blinds

Once a feature of every suburban home, venetian blinds have come a long way since they first became popular in the 1950s. Now available in a variety of materials such as timber, faux timber and vinyl, venetian blinds can be corded, cordless or motorised. When choosing venetian blinds, go for a wider slat to maximise your view, light and ease of cleaning.

Handy tip: Make sure you choose window treatments that you love, rather than something that is trending at the moment. After all, you’re the one who has to look at them every day! Also make sure they meet your needs when it comes to privacy, light control and insulation.
