Home decorator tips to create a designer look for less

25 January 2019

Creating a high-end look for your new home can be a challenge, especially if you’re on a budget. Fortunately however, there are many ways you can get a luxury look for less. There are lots of tricks that professional interior designers use to make a home look elegant, without breaking the bank. From adding cushions to complement your colour palette, and showcasing a vintage print, to incorporating gold accents for a touch of glamour, there are dozens of budget-friendly decorating solutions you can use throughout your new home.

Keep your styling simple

A cluttered, over-done space can look messy and chaotic, rather than stylish and sophisticated. Your eye simply doesn’t know where to look. Cull your collection so you only keep pieces with sentimental value, or that you absolutely love. A ‘pared back’ space will allow the remaining pieces to really shine. Think carefully about where you place each item. This may take time, but it will be worth the effort it in the long run.

Add interest with textiles

This is a trick designers use all the time. Give your home a custom look by using vintage or antique textiles to make throw cushions or to upholster chairs or stools. The unique fabric will give your home a bespoke look, and personalise your space beautifully. You’re sure to come across some interesting textiles at flea markets, charity shops and vintage stores.

Upsize your art

Create a memorable focal point for your new home by hanging an oversized piece of art in your living room. It will really make a statement, and you can base the rest of the room’s décor on the colour palette of the artwork. This is a very simple way of creating a high-impact look with little effort. And if you think large pieces of artwork are out of your price range, think again. Flea markets, thrift stores and auctions often have large pieces at reasonable prices, or if you’re up for it, get creative and make your own.

You can never have too many cushions

Cushions are a cheap and easy way to add texture and colour throughout your new home, from the bedrooms and the living areas, to the alfresco. Not only do they provide a little extra comfort on the sofa, but they also give a lovely, layered feel to your home’s interior. And the great thing about cushions is that when you tire of them, you can easily replace them without spending a fortune. Stores like Kmart and Target offer a fantastic selection of cushions that reflect the latest styles and trends.

Add a piece from the past

Incorporating a key piece with some age to it can create a lovely focal point for any room. From an old mirror with an interesting frame or a quirky side table, to a statement vase, if it has an air of vintage flair, it will not only look fabulous, but will probably serve as a wonderful talking point too. Using pieces like this is an excellent way to prevent your home from being too ‘vanilla’ and inject personality.

A touch of gold

There are many affordable ways to accessorise your home on a budget, especially if you go for gold. Gold can instantly add a touch of elegance, as long as you don’t go overboard! Look for things like photo frames, mirrors, bowls and knick knacks. And if gold’s not your thing, choose silver instead.

Cut the clutter

Did you know that one of the best ways to make your home look stylish doesn’t cost a cent? Cleaning and decluttering can actually make your home feel more high-end. And tidying is all the rage at the moment, with experts like Marie Kondo taking the world by storm with her best selling books and Netflix series. Regular cleaning allows you to avoid clutter in your home. Not only do you feel better about your surrounds, but it allows all the elements, from cushions and accessories, to lighting and flooring, to look their best.

Tricks of the trade

There are so many ways to make your home look great on a budget. Choosing stylish colours, avoiding poor quality pieces, and shopping wisely are just some of the tricks interior designers use to create high-end looks without spending a fortune. So why not try some of these techniques in your new home?
